Es un dicho muy común aquel de “Antigua Guatemala, la ciudad de las eternas rosas y las viejas chismosas” y, más allá de la gracia de la frase, es de reconocer que cierta parte oscura de la naturaleza humana nos identifica a todos con actitudes no precisamente éticas ni edificantes que, con todo y matices y perspectivas humorísticas, no dejan de ser principalmente resultado de

sociedades moralinas y conservadoras, castrantes de casi toda libertad individual e inquisidoras de la diversidad.

Aun así –y sin justificar esa práctica- también ocurre que el diabillo que

llevamos dentro puede además tornarse en un verdadero y peligroso

demonio, que convierte a las personas en eso, en entes sin alma que caminan por las calles empedradas, provocando daños sin miramientos más allá de su propia conveniencia, sea en los espacios íntimos o abiertamente en sociedad. Con el colorido que caracteriza las tradiciones guatemaltecas, esta exposición explora –paradójicamente, con ligereza y gravedad - el purgatorio en que puede resultar vivir en esta ciudad de rosas perpetuas y joyas coloniales, ángeles anónimos y entes grises, pero también diablillos y diablotes.

Inspirado en el baile tradicional de “La Danza de los 24 Diablos de Ciudad

Vieja” y la imagen del “ánima sola” quiero tocar algunos de los muchos temas que las personas se pueden encontrar en Antigua Guatemala, ya viviendo en esta ciudad. Me he inspirado en varios casos que han ocurrido en Antigua, así como algunos de los clichés que he encontrado en los comentarios de los antigueños.

It’s a very common saying, “Antigua, Guatemala, the city of the eternal roses and ladies that gossip” which, aside from the humor in the phrase, is meant to point out that we all identify with a certain dark side of human nature with

attitudes not precisely ethic nor edifying which, even with all their nuances and humorous perspectives, don’t stop being primarily a result of moralizing and conservative societies which castrate almost all individual freedom and

inquisitive diversity.

Regardless, without justifying the practice, it also happens that the devil within us can also become a real and dangerous demon that can turn people into bodies without souls, who walk the cobblestone streets causing damage unceremoniously, far beyond their own sake, whether it be in intimate spaces or openly in society. With a theme characterized by Guatemalan traditions, this exhibition explores, paradoxically with lightness and severity, the purgatory that can result from living in this city of perpetual roses and colonial jewels, anonymous angels and gray bodies, but also imps and devils.

DIABLO ALCALDE

Mayor Devil

DIABLO DE ALCURNIA

ORACIÓN: Gracias, Angel del Infierno por mantener tantas generaciones de mi familia pura y con sangre europea en las venas; por no habernos forzado a mezclarnos con esta raza de indios haraganes y, además, ser descendiente directo de importantes colonizadores. Te agradezco el privilegio de que mi familia ayude a mantener la poca moral y decencia que queda en este pueblo que queremos, por ser un antigüeño puro y verdadero que nunca tuvo necesidad de emigrar a la capital. Los viejos tiempos siempre fueron mejores.

Lineage Devil

Thank you, Angel of Hell for keeping so many generations of my family pure and with European blood in the veins; for not having forced us to mix with this race of lazy Indians and, besides, to be direct descendants of important settlers. I thank you for the privilege of my family helping to maintain the little morality and decency that remains in this town that we want, because it is a pure and true antiquity that never had need to emigrate to the capital. The old days were always better.

DIABLO LADRÓN

I thank you my beloved and almighty Lucifer for giving me the pleasure of collecting colonial art of the good variety, to be able to buy it effortlessly on the black market and for buying stolen pieces well cheap and for being able to sell them well expensive. Thank you Lucifer for providing me with art that is worth millions, for being so easy to obtain it from houses and churches in towns and for being able to traffic it. In particular, I thank you for the paintings of The Calvary that made me so happy. Amen

DIABLO CITADINO

ORACIÓN: Te doy gracias Satanás por permitirme venir a la Antigua que me encanta los viernes y sábados por la noche. Aquí es fácil emborracharme, drogarme y conseguir turistas borrachas que se dejen hacer cositas y siempre conseguir el muy famoso after y una esquina donde mear. Te pido diablito que pronto quiten estas molestas calles empedradas, que me

dificultan la caminata nocturna. Amén.

Urban Devil
I thank you Satan for allowing me to come to Antigua, that so much delights me on Friday and Saturday nights. Here it is difficult to get drunk, do drugs and hook up with drunken tourists who let you do little things to them, and for always finding the very famous after-party and a corner to piss in. I ask you little devil that soon enough they remove those annoying cobbled streets that make my nocturnal walk difficult.

LA MUERTE

ORACIÓN: Pobres sin ventura estos humanos y más tontos estos chapincitos…ah, tantos problemas entre ellos, tanto drama, cómo les encanta complicarse la vida e inventar

babosadas para sentirse superiores unos a otros y tratar mal a los que consideran menos, cuando de todas formas para mí todos son iguales y me los llevaré igual hasta que se desintegren en la tierra… al final yo no discrimino.

Death

Poor and unhappy are these humans, and stupider are these Chapincitos…ah, so many problems between them, so much drama, how much it amuses them to complicate their lives and come up with stupidities for some to feel superior than others and to treat badly those they consider lesser beings, when anyway for me all are equal and I’ll take them anyway when they disintegrate on earth...in the end I don’t discriminate.

DIABLO CONDUCTOR

ORACIÓN: Gracias Diablito poderoso por permitirme sobrecargar la burra de pasajeros y que pueda seguir trabajando de esto aunque maneje a la velocidad que se me da la gana. También le doy gracias por la diversión de pelear el pasaje con otras camionetas y que aunque nunca reviso los frenos, no me ha pasado nada. Además, agradezco que la gente sea obediente y se agache para que las autoridades no se den cuenta de que llevo más gente de la cuenta. La bajada de las Cañas es pan comido para mí. Amén.
